The South Omo River Valley : cultural heritage
Into
Southern Ethiopia you can meet the tribal peoples of the Omo
River Valley. Visiting the peoples of the South Omo is an enriching
and educational experience. Up to two dozen tribes inhabit the
area and one can visit villages and local markets. Whilst the
emphasis of the trip is on the peopleand thier culture, the
omo valley also offers a visit to the Rift Valley Lakes with
their beautiful scenery and fertile surroundings, and it is
likely to see a wide range of mammals in Nechisar and Mago Parks.
Omo
Valley is almost unique in the world in that so many different
people inhabit such a tiny area (250Km square meters of land
for 13 tribes). The peoples of the lower Omo Valley are considered
among the most fascinating on the African continent. The Omo
River Valley is still a virgin environment where tribal traditions
have remained unchanged. The women still dress in elaborately
decorated skins and the men celebrate adulthood with special
colored hair buns.
In
south omo valley about 13 tribes inhabit such a small region
and they have a defined territory for each tribe. These are
some of the tribes. Hamer, Konso, Mursi, Dorze, Tsamai, Bana,
Erbore, Konso, Gabbra and Borana just to name a few.
